Marshall Ulrich on the radio!

Hi All,

I think some of you might really enjoy this! I was the first women to race on team Stray Dogs with Marshall and Mark Macy! Sure some fun days in my life to remember.
Have a great day
Lisa

Fred Abaroa (fred@abaroa.org) is creating a body of podcast interviews about adventure racing; check it out www.farpodcast.org
. It is an interesting project, and is gaining momentum. Marshall Ulrich, Team Stray Dogs was interviewed last week and the recording is on the site now at http://farpodcast.libsyn.com/index.php?post_id=98977 – thought you might be interested. For more information on Marshall, you can also go to his web site at www.marshallulrich.com, and the team web site at www.teamstraydogs.com.

Others on the farpodcast site include Jodi Zwicky (who Marshall and Mark Macy raced with at Primal Quest 2003) and (coming soon) Stray Dog Mark Macy and his son, Travis.

This kind of project is good for the sport of adventure racing and for sponsors when they can be mentioned by name.

Lots of additional interviews will be added, so keep checking back to the site if you want to hear more.

Thursday night call

 Hello Everyone,
As you know from my posting on June 7th "Must read and must try" I am using
a new nanotechnology product from Lifewave with great results.
New and old products are presented to me quite often and it is almost a full
time job just
to sort through them. When I was introduced to the Lifewave patches I new
this was different
and what caught my attention was No Drugs, No Chemicals as a matter of fact
nothing entering
the body at all. Yes it was very difficult to get around my skepticism but
once I tried them it was
no longer an issue. This is for sure revolutionary but even more incredible
is that we are entering
a whole new industry. Software for the Human Body!
I will be telling my story on Lifewaves Thursday night call this week.
Please listen in...we need to pay
attention to this discovery...bringing the body into balance will be huge
for our Health and Well Being!

Call in number,  641-793-7500 code 741223# - 6:30PM PT - 7:30 PM MT - 8:30PM

beautiful!

Below is from one of my BW crew members. I think this has much to do with running and anything in our life. I will copy this and carry it with me and when the going gets tough I will draw on this and remember!

Lisa

But, in church on Sunday this passage was in the sermon and John (our pastor) looked at me and said we have someone in our congregation that will be tested in July.  He is aware of the race and praying for us all !!!!

"For when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be strong in character and ready for anything".

I am going to incorperated this passage into my badwater training.  I know the meaning has nothing to do with running but I can use it when it gets tough...

weekend

 Hi all!

Well the weekend for training did not go as planned for but hey this happens to us all!

Friday I set out to do 6-7 hours with my friend and BW crew member Erik, several other local runners were going to come and join us for both. The goal was to go up and down Ski Hill road to Targhee ski resort as many times as possible in the 6-7 hours. Its 6 miles one way UP HILL at 6-7% grade.

The forecast was for thunder storms all night.
We started off in the rain and it kept raining. I had all my Gortex clothes on that I would wear in the heart of the winter! Remember we are heat training.
As darkness starts come come so does the fog. We see a truck parked on the side of the road and ask them what they are doing. Hunting, they say. What are you hunting? Bear!!!!

We made it up the hill and down one time. As we are headed down the hill we smell dead fish is a few spots, the fog is so bad you cant see 5 feet in front of you. These hunters threw dead fish on the side of the road to bring the Bears out of the woods! Needless to say I was not comfortable with this at all. It was pitch black outside, raining and fog. All I kept thinking about was walking into a Bear and I know that Erik and I would taste much better than a dead fish!

We got back to the van in 2:38 total time and I called it a day. I told Erik that I was freezing cold, it was 43 degrees and we were soaked. My idea of Heat training and a fun workout does not include rain, cold and BEARS!!!
We made a good call, the other local runners never showed up and it started pouring rain even worse and even some snow and hail at the resort.
I really don't feel you have to be miserable in your training, but if this happened in a race you would do your very best to work through the situations.

Sat. I did 3 hours pushing Gabby and pulling Annabella. I had all my gortex clothes on and I was HOT!
Sun. I did 3 hours again and cross training. So in the end I got my long run in for the weekend, it was just during 3 different time periods.

Sometimes you just have to do what you have to do.

Hope your weekend was great

The Trouble Tree

This was sent to me by a friend on Friday. I think it's wonderful!

Happy weekend
Lisa

Trouble Tree
Author Unknown
I hired a plumber to help me restore an old farmhouse, and after he had just finished a rough first day on the job, a flat tire made him lose an hour of work & his electric drill quit, his ancient one ton truck refused to start. As I drove him home, he sat in stony silence.
On arriving he invited me in to meet his family. As we walked toward the front door, he paused briefly at a small tree, touching the tips of the branches with both hands. Upon opening the door he had undergone an amazing transformation. His tanned face was wreathed in smiles and he hugged his two small children and gave his wife a kiss.
Afterward he walked me to the car. We passed the tree and my curiosity got the better of me. I asked him about what I had seen him do at the little tree.
"Oh, that's my trouble tree," he replied. "I know I can't help having troubles on the job, but one thing's for sure, those troubles don't belong in the house with my wife and the children. So I just hang them up on the tree every night when I come home and ask God to take care of them. Then in the morning I pick them up again."
"Funny thing is," he smiled, "when I come out in the morning to pick them up, there aren't nearly as many as I remember hanging up the night before."

Heat training

It is getting hot all over the USA, even got up to 88 degrees here on Wed.!

Many people have trouble training in the heat and say they feel just awful after workouts.
Some of the key things I do for training in the heat are listed below:

1. go out early in the morning on in the evening to do your workouts. I like to go in the heat of the day but hey, that is just me:) I also feel it best to train in the early morning if your going to run a race in the morning. This way your body is used to it.

2. carry hand hold water bottles with you and use a sports drink that will replace the minerals you are loosing through your sweat!

3. make sure you wear a hat and sunglasses
4. put ice in a baggies and place on top of your head under your hat.
5. where a neck scarf that is cold, they do sell these
6. wear silk weight or the light wool clothing and light colors..patagonia or smart wool are best
7. sunscreen!
8. use a run/walk pattern
9. run under sprinklers along the way
10.take a cool bath to recover

If you feel light headed, dizzy, headache, stomach ache chances are the heat is getting to you and you need to stop, get in the shade and recover. Make sure you go into every workout hydrated which requires you to drink water throughout the day!

We sell of of the products that we use for a discount and can ship right to you!
Nathan water bottles
All the Hammer Nutrition products
Sharkies
Hydropel
and much, much more!

How many of us feel like this?

on a day off from training???

Ugh!  This often happens on days off. In less than 24 hour I go from an ultra-endurance athlete in-training, to a grazing slug that doesn't want to leave the house. It didn't help that it was overcast most of the day and cold in my house.

I do, I do. To be honest I have had the last 4 days off where I was saying Ugh! Back to work at the resort and being gone for 21 days and having stomach issues. I will be back in action on Thursday and then plan to go hard for 5 weeks.
Ugh to us all!

:)

Must read and must try!

Hi friends, family and fellow athletes,

I'm not going to tell you one of my new training, race and recover secrets! Works for me so I know will work for you!

It has taken me some time to write up a short story about this awesome
product that both Jay and I used before the MDS, during the MDS and will
continue to use.
I was contacted by the company Lifewave a week before I went to run the
Grasslands 50 mile. I had heard about this company from a good friend of
mine who is a Chiropractor but I never followed through nor did I check them
out.
When  I was contacted again I bought some of the products to try .  I felt
that I of course had nothing to lose but to test them out.
The LifeWave technology is a pair of non-transdermal patches that you wear
on the body just like a band aid and they help the body to increase energy
without drugs or chemicals. These patches increase the  burning of fat for
energy resulting in increased stamina, endurance and performance!
I am telling you about these patches now because I have had much time to
test them out and I am 100% convinced that these things work and have helped
me gain much of what I had lost in my training.
I wore them before, during and after the Grasslands 50 mile race. I felt
great the entire time and recovered better than ever. I used them each day
during the MDS, so did Jay and we were both having a great race and the most
amazing thing to   both of us was we were not sore at the end of each day
like we used to  be. I have continued to use the patches during my training
to run 300 miles in July through Death Valley and I am feeling stronger and
more fit as time goes by. The real key is the energy that I am feeling and
the way I'm recovering from one day to the next. I feel a stable level of
energy all day long.
Jay and I both used the sleep patch at night during the MDS. I have never
been able to sleep during this race with people snoring! We both slept so
well each night and woke up with no soreness and a full nights sleep.
The patches are small and you only wear 2 of them, one white and one tan.
The sleep patch is just one patch on the temple of your eye.
This company has other products that we have not tried out yet but we look
forward to them all.
I think all of you know me well enough to know that I would not tell you to
try something if I did not think they really would help you or work. I'm
telling you these patches work and I'm hooked.

I just ran the SP 50 mile race and had  2 patches on my
ankles. I noticed several others with patches on as well. Although my stomach was a mess during the last 25 miles of the race my legs did not get sore, nor did the feel beat up like they usually do. Needless to say, you will see me with these patches on all the time now!

I'm going to be doing a phone conference about these patches on Thursday
June 15th 7:30 MST..call in  number is  1-641-793-7500 then 741223#

Please visit the web site  www.lifewave.com/dreamchasers  if you want
information about Lifewave contact  Brett or  Bill or with any questions, these are the guys I bought the patches from.

poison ivy on the butt!

Good thing to watch when your going to the bathroom in the woods!!! watch out for the poison Ivy!!!

Hey, I have a funny story for you - on my long training run on saturday I managed to get poison ivy.  Lesson learned for me - watch where you pull off the trail when you decide to take a potty break!  Not a big deal, just funny and itchy :-)  When I went to see my doctor today, she said that it's always the healthiest people like us that have things like this, plus the cuts, bruises, blisters, etc.  because the unhealthy folks are inside!  I'll take the cuts and bruises any day....

Ray Zahab and team wins Gobi March!

 Hey Lisa!
Just a quick note as I have just arrived back at
hotel. Kevin, Charlie and I have won the Gobi March
Team event as Team Chunghwa/Mago !

We also placed consistently in the "individual" rank
daily in the top 3- even tying for 1st in the long
stage. This has never been doe by a team in an event
like this before ! We are so happy !

A team usually does not move as fast as a solo runner
- there are so many variables that we have to deal
with that solo runners do not.

Congrats to all of the incredible runners in this
unbelievably tough event. You might recognize the
winner of the solo event- he is a fantstic Korean
runner that was at Sahara Race when Kev and I were
there last October.

Juan rocks his half marathon this past weekend!

Lisa,
I did the half marathon today in 1:45:31 or 8:03 pace at 92% of max and I felt awesome!  My last PR was 1:51:29 so 6 minutes off! The course was rolling hills so not a flat and fast course.  I ran my heart out - 7:50 pace for a long time and then 8 minute pace for a few miles on the hills.  If I keep this up, I will rock in Chicago in November.

SP 50!!

 Hi guys and gals,
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend.

SP 50 mile did not turn out the way I thought it would but I did learn and work through some very hard mental and physical things.
I got a great nights sleep on Friday which is rare with 2 little kids sleeping in the same room with us!
Up at 3am, had my coffee, ensure and started to drink water, the weather forecast was for over 90 degrees. I felt good and hydrated and ready to rock!
My friend George was going to run part of the race with me and then my sweet Jay was going to do the last half with me, he is training for Western States 100!
Colleen a friend of our was going to help watch the kids and the great news is she ended up doing close to 4 miles with me. Thank you to George and Colleen for helping with our girls so that I could get to the finish line!

I got right on my target race plan. 5am start. The first 23 miles I felt so great and all was going perfect with my walk run plan. Have to say my walking was faster than most people running near me:)
At 23 miles I met up with Jay and my stomach started to feel very sick and by 25 miles I could only walk. Many say that they felt sick as well and think we may have had some bad water at the last aid station.
Needless to say my stomach was so bad that running was not possible. I felt so bad for Jay being with me but did my very best to not complain and to just keep moving forward.
I kept trying to run but each time I did I felt worse. I thought about the BW double and that I had to work through this as much as getting in a car and going home seemed like the only thing I wanted to do. I took tums, drank malox and nothing worked.
I walked a good 25-30 miles of the course.
The long steep climb after aid station 8 was so hard for me but I did it and was so thankful once at the top. Tons of snow!! Thanks to Jay for helping me get to this point!
I got to the station and we had 11 miles left to go. I just made up my mind that I had to just get to the end and that my stomach was going to hurt if I tried to move faster or if I went slow. I got into a very good power walk down hill and really focused on this and not my stomach. It was working and I started to feel proud of myself for working through this stomach mess!
Last aid station and 3.5 miles left to go on the road..I made myself run it, I cried, threw up, went to the bathroom 4 times but I kept on running.
I saw my kids, Jay, George, Colleen and Olga as I came up the finish line. I was happy, I was proud that I toughed it out and learned how to deal..it was not easy:)
Olga did great, she ran a 11:50. I came in at 13:08 which I am very happy about.
I don't know if I won anything in the masters women or not but I did win the race. for I kept going when everything in me wanted to go home!
Its a great 50 mile race, hard one that is for sure.
Photos to come soon

It will be enough

Hi all,
This was sent to me from a coaching client today. How very true her words are.
I am thankful to you all for your insights and words of wisdom.
Lisa

 Hi Lisa,

Thanks for checking in with me.  I have been really thinking about you and
your new lifestyle with the kids, work, travel and training and wondering
how you are doing with it all.  This time of year when races and training
camps are happening, the extra stress of it all can pounce upon our backs
and we not notice the extra weight of it all until the excitement is over.
I can't imagine what is going through your head while you balance it all.
You are a multi-faceted and multi-skilled person with multiple and intense
personal projects on your agenda.  Please pace yourself because whatever
you do or don't get done today, it will be enough.

sunny, hot and perfect today! I pray for the same on Sat. for the SP 50 mile.
It was so wonderful to see Jay at the airport. Annabella ran so fast to jump into her daddys arms. She had everyone on the plane clap for her as we were landing in SLC and she was yelling, I'm home daddy, I'm home!!!
I'm looking forward to seeing many new and old friends/clients this weekend, this is really my favorite part of the sport of ultra running. The people, the wonderful people.
Finlay: I won the Grasslands 50 because all the fast women did not show up!:)
I won because I stayed at 80% and can power walk 5 mph and because I stuck out the plan I made for the race. I worked on my hydration and got 300 calories an hour in.
It worked like magic, now let's see about tomorrow!
If you are doing a race this weekend yourself, have a safe one and remember to stay hydrated!

Many Blessings
Lisa

SP 50mile

Ok so you think I am crazy for running 50 miles less than a week from having a kidney stone?
It will be 6 full days of no training going into the 50 mile and as of this moment I feel back to normal!
The Doctor I saw here told me to take it very easy for 1 week, so hey 6 days is close to a week:)
My plan is to just participate in the race. My put your head down and fight race days are over.
This is good training for my Badwater journey and its close to home. John the RD of the race does such an amazing job with this event and the course is VERY difficult with steep climbs.
My plan is to PW all the climbs, even the ones on the roads, go 3/2 on the downhill sections and 4/1 any flats. This is my BW race plan so I want to practice it. I hope it gets really sunny and hot!
If all fails I will PW (power walk) the entire race!
I was feeling very fit and strong 4 days ago and feel confident that my having to take 6 days off is and always is a blessing in some way.
Have a great day!

Memorial Day weekend in the Tetons!

Below is one athletes weekend! When I spoke to my husband Jay on Monday he said, the snow is blowing so hard its going sideways!!! I was really happy to be in Chicago where it was over 90 degrees.:)

Hi Lisa,

I am a New Yorker – born and breed. I live in an apartment that is probably smaller than the size of most of your clients’ gear closets. I love it but there’s always room in life to experience more, right?

So it’s my great luck to be spending two months in the beautiful Teton Valley – a time period which includes Memorial Day weekend. In NY, this weekend typically means bar-b-ques and perhaps even visits to the beach. So I wasn’t sure what to expect in Teton Valley.

Hmmm…here’s what I got: sunshine, rain, snow, and h-a-i-l! And that was just Sunday! On Sunday, I sheltered myself from the elements until noon (okay, actually I slept in!) and then I headed out. I was about 25 minutes into my walk when the hail really started coming down. So I hitched back to the place where I am staying (another first for me – hitchhiking!). I waited another hour or two and my roommate invited me to join her and a friend for a trail run.

Yep, my very first trail run! The hail had disappeared and while the weather was still difficult to predict, it looked like it would hold up for us. I am so grateful it did. For my very first trail run, I found myself climbing up this beautiful hillside that reminded me of the Sound of Music. We even saw people riding horses. And then when we got a little further, I felt as though we entered an enchanted forest.

NY might be the city never sleeps, but I am growing convinced that the Teton Valley is the place that never stays the same. As Erik tells me, forget weather.com – go out and look at the sky!

I hope a lot of your friends can make it out here to see the beauty…if life continues to shine on me the way it has since my arrival, I would love to be back for the Teton Races over Labor Day weekend. Can you & Jay promise no hail, though!?!

All the best,

Colleen
